Obesity is a term used to describe somebody who is very overweight with a high degree of body fat. Being a little overweight may not cause many noticeable problems, but once you are carrying a few extra kilograms, you may develop symptoms that affect your daily life.
The most widely used method to assess a person’s weight is the body mass index (BMI), which is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared.
As proven by research a lot of obesity related health issues are like a cascade of events, which start long before BMI reaches 25 and restrictions of detecting obesity with BMI causes missing the diagnosis at the right time. - If you are on certain medicine
- Underactive thyroid or autoimmune thyroiditis knows as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

- Menopause: Midlife weight gain in women is mainly due to ageing and lifestyle, but menopause also plays a role. Many women gain about 5 pounds during menopause and have more fat around the waist than they did before.

- Lack of sleep: Sleep also affects how your body reacts to insulin, the hormone that controls your blood glucose (sugar) level.

If your bmi is
- between 25 and 29, you would be considered overweight
- between 30 and 40, you would be considered obese
- over 40, you would be considered very obese.
Another useful method is to measure around your waist.
MEN whose waist measurement is 94 cm or more
WOMEN whose waist measurement is 80 cm or more are more likely to develop obesity-related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer.
